Fraction guide

Supports the four operations, simplification, mixed numbers and fraction–decimal conversion. Use it to verify answers before asking the solver for a full derivation.

Rules

  • Addition/Subtraction: same denominator, then add/subtract numerators.
  • Different denominators: find LCM for a common denominator.
  • Multiplication: numerator times numerator, denominator times denominator.
  • Division: multiply by the reciprocal of the second fraction.
  • Simplify: divide by GCD.

Conversions

  • Fraction → Decimal: numerator ÷ denominator.
  • Decimal → Fraction: write as power of ten, then simplify.
  • Mixed number: 1 2/3 = (1 × 3 + 2) / 3 = 5/3.

Sample calculations

5/2 + 3/2 = 4.

1/2 + 1/3 → LCM 6 → 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6.

15/25 = 3/5 (GCD 5).

2/5 = 0.4.

3 1/4 = 13/4.

Pitfalls

  • Adding denominators instead of making them equal first.
  • Leaving the result unsimplified.
  • Swapping numerator and denominator when converting.

Uses

  • Recipes and measures (halves, quarters).
  • Geometry (fractional lengths or areas).
  • Proportionality and fair sharing.

Quick answers

  • Wrong result? Check common denominator and simplification.
  • Mixed numbers? Use format "2 3/4".
  • For a step-by-step derivation, head to the main solver and paste your expression.
